American Natural Premium Information
American Natural Premium was founded in 1998 by Gene Large and Jennifer Burlo. The founders owned a kennel and wanted to produce better food for the dogs. Since then, they have grown to produce and distribute dog and cat food countrywide.
American Natural Premium is one of a growing number of brands to take advantage of concerns around the use of Legumes in dog food. They have chosen to produce three new legume-free recipes, and they heavily advertise these on their site.
However, they still produce their legume-inclusive recipes along with some other common and traditional recipes.
While information is scarce, we believe that American Natural Premium recipes are made in the United States at a facility shared with the well-known brand Fromm. The manufacturing plants that produce the food for both brands are in Wisconsin.
American Natural Premium is available from select retail stores across the United States but is not sold as commonly as other brands. However, you can easily purchase American Natural Premium online from some of the large pet food websites like Chewy.
American Natural Premium Product Range
Dog Food
American Natural Premium has a moderately sized dog food range. This range only contains dry food, but it does contain a significant variety.
They produce grain-inclusive recipes, grain-free recipes, and legume-free recipes. Also, they also have recipes aimed at puppies.
It’s not clear at this time why American Natural Premium has chosen not to produce wet dog food and whether it plans on doing so in the future.
Cat Food
American Natural Premium has a very small cat food range, which consists of two dry food recipes. Given the very small product range, there is a limited variety.
American Natural Premium Nutrition
Dog Food
Unfortunately, the nutrition provided by American Natural Premium dog food recipes is not particularly impressive, and we consider it to be average to above-average.
Their recipes’ nutritional profile often includes a modest proportion of protein and fat and significant proportions of carbohydrates. This is not a fair reflection of a dog’s natural diet, and many dogs would be better suited to a diet higher in animal-based protein and fat.
Below is an example of the nutrition provided by an American Natural Premium recipe.
Cat Food
American Natural Premium’s cat food recipes share a similar nutritional profile to their dog food recipes. This includes average proportions of protein and a significant portion of carbohydrates.
Cats are obligate carnivores and do not require a large portion of carbohydrates in their diet. Their digestive system is designed and best suited to consume meat and fish ingredients exclusively.
American Natural Premium Ingredients
High-Quality Meat & Fish Ingredients
- Chicken
- Turkey
- Duck
- Pork
- Beef
- Lamb
American Natural Premium uses a range of common meat ingredients in their recipes. This includes poultry ingredients like Chicken and Turkey and red meat ingredients like Beef and Lamb.
These are reliable and affordable sources of animal-based protein and fat. American Natural Premium places these are the core of the recipes, which is where they should be.
Some American Natural Premium recipes contain Liver ingredients such as Chicken Liver. Liver is the most common organ meat included in dog food, and it is used because it can provide some vitamins and minerals in high concentrations that may be lacking in traditional meat cuts.
Other Notable Ingredients
American Natural Premium recipes use a wide range of grain ingredients such as Brown Rice, White Rice, Oatmeal, Sorghum, and Barley. Grain ingredients such as these are often controversial additions to pet food recipes, with many pet owners being against their use.
However, some of these grains used by American Natural Premium are considered the preferred or favored ones, such as Brown Rice and Oatmeal.
Sadly, others such as White Rice are considered to provide less nutrition beyond their carbohydrate content.
You can read about some of these ingredients in the below articles.
Pumpkin is commonly given to dogs to aid digestion. It contains high levels of fiber and is relatively cheap and inexpensive.
However, some dog food brands use it as a carbohydrate source. However, the portion in American Natural Premium recipes is not that high, and it is not a primary carbohydrate source.

Chickpeas, Peas, Lentils are the most common legume ingredients used in dog food recipes. Their popularity has grown substantially over the last decade, and now almost all premium brands make use of legumes. This is thanks to their low cost and high availability.
Legumes provide a mix of carbohydrates, plant-based protein, fiber, and some vitamins and minerals.
However, in recent years, there are concerns and links between the high use of legumes and the increased rate of Canine Heart Disease.
If you’d like to learn more about this, we recommend reading the following articles where we discuss it in-depth.
Peas, Pea Protein, Pea Flour, and Pea Fiber in Dog Food
Some American Natural Premium recipes include Beet Pulp. Dried Beet Pulp is used in pet food recipes as s source of soluble fiber.
Soluble fiber can be critical to some dogs to ensure they keep regular digestion and stools. Outside of this fiber content, the ingredient provides little nutrition.

Flaxseed is a common addition to many dog food recipes, especially those of premium brands. This is as it is the best plant-based source of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids, which many believe can provide a range of health benefits to dogs.

Brewers Yeast is a less common ingredient to be found in pet food and is included due to its supposed health benefits as well as some minor nutrition it can provide. An example of this would be high levels of the B Vitamins.

American Natural Premium Animal Testing
At this time, we have no information on what type of testing that American Natural Premium participates in.
We strongly believe that animal testing in a laboratory or invasive fashion is a cruel and outdated practice. We hope that it will see a significant decline.
American Natural Premium Recalls
Based on our research (FDA, AVMA, DogFoodAdvisor), American Natural Premium has no history of recalls and is, therefore, a recall-free brand.
This is a positive sign and shows that American Natural Premium take their quality and safety measures seriously.
Despite this, all consumers should be wary of any future recalls of American Natural Premium or any other pet food brand.

Triple Protein with Ancestral Grains Review
ㅤTriple Protein Recipe With Ancestral Grains is one of American Natural Premium’s new “legume-free” recipes and was made to appeal to consumers concerned about the recent connection between legumes and canine dilated cardiomyopathy. You can read more about this link in our article Best Dog Foods Without Peas.
As the name gives away, the recipe uses three meat sources, which are Chicken, Turkey, and Pork. Pork is an unusual addition and rarely features in pet food recipes. Despite this, it is still a high-quality ingredient and should not be dismissed.
These three meat ingredients provide a reasonable portion of animal-based protein and fat, which would be suitable for most dogs.
The recipe then uses a mix of grain ingredients to provide carbohydrates and dietary fiber. Examples of these grain ingredients include Sorghum, Oat flour, Barley, and Quinoa.
Puppy Food Review
ㅤThe above Puppy recipe is not a new addition and has been a staple of American Natural Premium’s range for years.
Its primary ingredient is Chicken Meal, and the portion of this ingredient present is significant. Many consumers are afraid of meat meals like Chicken Meal, but they shouldn’t be as they are an incredibly dense source of nutrition. This is as they have already had the bulk of their moisture removed.
Outside of this large portion of Chicken Meal is a mix of Rice, Oat, and Barley ingredients. These act as the recipe’s primary sources of carbohydrates.
There are also minor portions of ingredients like Beet Pulp and brewers Yeast, which boost levels of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
