Annamaet Information

Annamaet was founded in 1986 by Rob Downey and his wife, Mary Jo. Rob has an extensive and detailed history of researching canine nutrition, and Annamaet’s website lists many of his publications.

The brand is based in Sellersville, PA, and all of its recipes are manufactured in the United States.

It is not clear where Annamaet sources its ingredients, but it is implied that many of them are sourced from the United States.

One of Annamaet’s unique selling points is its sustainable recipes. These recipes use sustainably sourced fish, which is very rare in the pet food industry.

Annamaet sustainable ingredients

While it’s not widely advertised, most animal and fish sources found in pet food are from factories or intensive farms as they are the most cost-efficient source.

Annamaet recipes can be purchased from thousands of physical pet food stores across the United States, and you can use their Find A Retailer tool to search for a store near you.

In addition to local pet stores, the brand is available from most of the large online pet food retailers like Chewy, Amazon, and Petflow.

Annamaet Product Range

Dog Food

Annamaet’s dog food range is moderately sized but varied. It consists of a variety of dry dog food recipes, including some designed for puppies and dogs with varying levels of activity.

Within this range, there is also a choice between grain-inclusive recipes and grain-free recipes.

Annamaet also produces a small range of dog treats and dog supplements. These products complement some of the dry dog food recipes available.

Annamaet Enhance Supplement

Cat Food

Annamaet has a tiny cat food range consisting of three dry cat food formulas. This range includes an adult recipe, a kitten recipe, and a recipe that aims to be sustainable.

Despite its popularity, Annamaet has yet to produce any wet/canned cat food.

Annamaet Nutrition

Dog Food

While the nutrition of Annamaet dog food varies, it is generally above average when compared to other dog food brands.

It typically consists of high proportions of protein and fat and modest proportions of carbohydrates.

Below is an example of the nutritional breakdown of an Annamaet grain-free recipe.

Annamaet Example Dog Food Nutrition

As you can see, the sum of protein and fat in this recipe is substantial and makes up almost two-thirds of the overall calorie content.

This kind of nutritional profile is a fair reflection of a dog’s natural diet and will be suitable for most dogs, including those who are more active.

If you’d like to learn more about canine nutrition, then we highly recommend you read our Dog Food Guide for a detailed discussion and overview.

Cat Food

The nutrition offered by Annamaet cat food is above average when compared to other cat food brands.

However, the proportion of carbohydrates is still significant and far above what a cat should be consuming.

Cats are obligate carnivores and so do not require a notable portion of plant-based material in their diet.

Annamaet Ingredients

High-Quality Meat & Fish Ingredients

  • Chicken
  • Lamb
  • Salmon
  • Cod
  • Carp
  • Whitefish

Annamaet has a relatively small range of meat and fish ingredients in its products. This consists of some staples of the industry, like Chicken and Salmon, but also some less common ingredients, like Cod and Carp.

All of these ingredients are fantastic sources of animal-based protein and fat. This should be at the core of every dog or cat food and is their natural source of nutrition.

Other Notable Ingredients

Annamaet uses a variety of grain ingredients in its recipes, including Brown Rice, Millet, Oats, and Barley. Grain ingredients are dense sources of carbohydrates, but they also contain some protein and fiber.

Grains are a controversial addition to dog food, with many pet owners being against their use. Despite this, the grains Annamaet chooses to utilize are some of the less controversial options.

You can read more about some of these grain ingredients and their use in dog food in the below articles.

Millet In Dog Food

Barley In Dog Food

Millet Close Up

Annamaet uses all three of the most popular legume ingredients that are found in dog food. These include Lentils, Peas, and Chickpeas.

Legume ingredients are so popular because they are easy to source, affordable, and offer favorable nutrition.

However, there are growing links between high proportions of legumes in dog food recipes and Canine Heart Disease. You can learn more about this link here.

Eggs are a fantastic addition to any dog food recipe, and Annamaet uses them in select recipes. Eggs are extremely nutritionally dense and can provide protein, fat, and beneficial vitamins and minerals.

They also have a high bioavailability, which means almost all of their nutrition will be absorbed by a dog’s digestive system.

Chicken Fat is a regular addition to dog food recipes and is used to enhance flavor and boost the overall proportion of fat.

Chicken Fat is chosen for this task as it is an animal-based fat, it is easy to source, and it is affordable. Read more in Chicken Fat In Dog Food.

Chicken Hen

Coconut Flour is a very unusual addition to dog food and one that is very rarely seen. Annamaet uses it in a small number of their recipes.

Annamaet uses Dried Beet Pulp as a source of soluble fiber in some of their recipes. Dietary Fiber can be crucial to some dogs to ensure they have regular and stable digestion.

Beyond its fiber content, Dried Beet Pulp provides very little nutrition. You can read more about this ingredient in Dried Beet Pulp In Dog Food.

Brewers Yeast is used in dog food as it can provide beneficial vitamins and minerals.

These micronutrients can have a positive effect on some dogs’ overall health. Learn more about which nutrients Brewers Yeast can provide in Brewers Yeast In Dog Food.

Flaxseed is known as one of the best plant-based sources of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids, which is why it is so commonly seen in dog food.

These fatty acids are believed to provide several health benefits, including improved skin and coat. Learn more about Flaxseed in our article Flaxseed In Dog Food.

Annamaet Animal Testing

We have no information on what type of animal testing Annamaet participates in.

We strongly believe that invasive or laboratory testing of animals is a cruel and outdated practice. We hope that one day soon, it will be eliminated or reduced.

Annamaet Recalls

Based on our research (FDA, AVMA, DogFoodAdvisor), Annamaet is a recall-free brand.

This is a great indicator that Annamaet takes the quality and safety of its manufacturing process seriously.

Despite this, we encourage pet owners to be vigilant of any future recalls from Annamaet or any other pet food brand.

Best of Annamaet

Annamaet Sustain Review

Annamaet Sustain

As we mentioned earlier, Annamaet takes an interest in using sustainable ingredients.

The above Sustain recipe is the best example of this, as they use sustainable sources for their core fish ingredient. Most fish found in dog food is low-cost and not sustainable, so Annamaet is bucking the trend.

The core ingredient is Cod, and there is also a smaller portion of Turkey Meal present. This combination provides an ample proportion of protein and fat, which is suitable for the majority of dogs.

The recipe then uses a mix of Lentils, Sweet Potatoes, Peas, and Tapioca to provide carbohydrates and fiber.

Grain-Free Feline Review

Annamaet Grain Free Feline

The above cat food recipe is our favorite out of Annamaet’s small range. The primary reason for this is the excellent nutrition the recipe offers, including 44% protein and 20% fat.

This nutritional profile is thanks to a large portion of Chicken Meal and Whitefish Meal. Both of these ingredients are high-quality additions that are nutritionally dense.

The recipe then uses a small portion of Peas and Tapioca to provide some carbohydrates and fiber. This proportion of carbohydrates is far smaller than most cat food recipes.
