Dr. Tim’s Information

As you may have guessed, Dr. Tim’s pet food was founded by Dr. Tim in 2004, who is a famous veterinarian. It is said that he created his first kibble recipes in his garage with a cement mixer.

Dr. Tim strongly believes in a meat-based diet, high in animal-based protein and fat. This belief is reflected in his recipes.

Dr. Tim’s is also a transparent brand when compared to others and gives information on its website about the source of all of its ingredients. This level of transparency is appreciated, and many other brands could strive to achieve this.

Dr. Tim’s pet food products are produced in the United at a manufacturing facility in Kansas, which is owned by Alphia Foods.

You can purchase Dr. Tim’s products from physical retail pet food stores across the United States and at online retailers like Chewy and Amazon.

Dr. Tim’s Product Range

Dog Food

Dr. Tim’s has a moderately sized product range of dog food. However, all of their recipes are dry dog food recipes, and they do not sell wet/canned dog food.

Within the range of dry dog food are a number of specialty recipes, including those for very active dogs and those that need a lower calorie diet.

Dr. Tim’s also has variety between grain-free dog food recipes and grain-inclusive dog food recipes.

Cat Food

Dr. Tim’s has a tiny cat food range consisting of a single dry cat food recipe and a wet cat food recipe.

Because of this small product range, Dr. Tim’s does not produce any specialty cat food, such as kitten food or senior cat food.

It is also noteworthy that Dr. Tim’s single cat food recipe is grain-inclusive and not grain-free.

Dr. Tim’s Nutrition

Dog Food

While the nutrition provided by Dr. Tim’s dog food recipes varies, it is generally above-average, with some recipes being significantly above-average.

This means that the proportion of protein and fat, especially animal-based, is high and sufficient for dogs of all activity levels.

You can see an example of the nutrition provided by a Dr. Tim’s recipe below.

Cat Food

The nutrition provided by the two Dr. Tim’s cat food recipes is also satisfactory and above-average when compared to other cat food brands.

High levels of animal-based protein and fat are even more important to cats as they are obligate carnivores. This means that they do not need to consume plant-based food and thrive on meat and fish ingredients.

Dr. Tim’s Ingredients

High-Quality Meat & Fish Ingredients

  • Chicken
  • Catfish
  • Herring
  • Salmon
  • Pork
  • Pollock

Dr. Tim’s recipes use a moderate range of high-quality meat and fish ingredients. Some are common in the industry, like Chicken and Salmon, but others like Catfish and Pollock are quite uncommon.

Despite this, these ingredients will consistently provide high levels of protein and fat, which should be at the core of every dog’s diet.

Other Notable Ingredients

Dr. Tim’s recipes use a large range of grain ingredients, including Brown Rice, Barley, Oat Groats, Millet, Quinoa, and Spelt. While some of these are common additions to dog food, such as Brown Rice and Barley, others are relatively uncommon, such as Spelt and Quinoa.

Grain ingredients can be extremely controversial in the pet food world, with many pet owners refusing to feed their pets food that contains grains.

Despite this, these grain ingredients are considered by many to be superior to others, such as Corn and Wheat. They can provide a mix of carbohydrates, plant-based protein, fiber, and micronutrients.

If you are interested in some of these specific grain ingredients, check out the articles below.

Chicken Fat is a common addition to dog food recipes, including Dr. Tims. Its purpose is to improve the flavor of the food and increase the proportion of animal fat in the recipe. Chicken Fat is often chosen over alternatives as it is more cost-effective.

You can read more about Chicken Fat in our article, Chicken Fat In Dog Food.

Dried Beet Pulp is another regular addition to dog food. It is added as it is a very efficient source of soluble fiber. Fiber can be crucial to some dogs to ensure they have regular digestion and stools. Dried Beet Pulp provides little to no nutrition beyond its fiber content.

Check out our article Dried Beet Pulp In Dog Food for more information.

Peas and Chickpeas are two of the three most common legume ingredients used in dog food. Legumes have surged in popularity over the last two decades as part of the grain-free pet food trend.

Legumes can provide impressive nutrition for a plant-based ingredient, with high levels of protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and select vitamins and minerals.

However, there have been links in recent years between the high use of legume ingredients in dog food and an increased rate of Canine Heart Disease. You can read more about this here.

Potatoes and Tapioca are both starch ingredients that are found in some of Dr. Tim’s recipes. They are very dense sources of carbohydrates compared to other plant-based ingredients, and so their portion size needs to be tightly controlled.

While starch ingredients like Potatoes do provide some other nutrition outside of their carbohydrate content, it is minimal.

Tapioca is an ingredient that many in the western world are not familiar with, so we recommend you check out our article Tapioca In Dog Food to learn more.

Tapioca

Flaxseed is another regular addition to pet food recipes and is often used by premium brands. Flaxseed is added to recipes because it is an excellent plant-based source of the Omega 3 Fatty acids.

These fatty acids are thought to provide several health benefits to dogs and cats, including an improvement in the condition of skin, fir, and coats.

If you would like to learn more about Flaxseed, including its other benefits, read our article Flaxseed In Dog Food.

Dr. Tim’s Animal Testing

At this time, we have no information on what type of animal testing, if any, that Dr. Tim’s pet food participates in.

Many pet food brands avoid disclosing information on how they test their foods as they fear consumer backlash.

We strongly believe that laboratory and invasive testing of animals is a cruel and outdated practice and one which should be eliminated.

Dr. Tim’s Recalls

Based on our research (FDA, AVMA, DogFoodAdvisor), Dr. Tim’s products have never been recalled.

Given that the brand is approaching twenty years in operation, this is an impressive feat. This lack of recalls shows that they take the safety and quality of their production process seriously.

In spite of this, we encourage all pet owners to be careful and vigilant of any future recalls of Dr. Tim’s or any other pet food brand.

RPM Salmon & Pork Grain-Free Recipe Review

Dr Tim's RPM Salmon & Pork Grain Free

Check Price On Chewy

The above RPM Salmon & Pork recipe is one of our favorite from Dr. Tim’s range. This is thanks to its excellent nutrition and focuses on a high-quality ingredient in Salmon.

Salmon is often favored over other ingredients as it is an excellent source of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids. These fatty acids are believed by many to provide dogs with several health benefits.

However, there is also a sizeable portion of Pork present, which is an unusual addition to pet food. Many of the larger brands choose not to use Pork in favor of ingredients like Chicken, Beef, and Turkey.

Dr. Tim’s uses a large range of plant-based ingredients in this recipe, including Potatoes, Peas, Tapioca, and Chickpeas. This mix of starch and legume ingredients provides a modest proportion of carbohydrates and some dietary fiber.

Chase Review

Dr. Tim's Chase Cat Food

Check Price On Chewy

Given the lack of variety in Dr. Tim’s cat food range, we weren’t given much choice on our favorite recipe. Despite this, the above Chase formula is worth discussing.

The recipe has a huge portion of Chicken Meal at its center. Meat meals such as Chicken Meal are often offputting to pet owners, but they should not be.

Meat meals have simply had their moisture removed in advance, which means that they are an incredibly nutritionally dense ingredient.

Outside of this Chicken Meal, the recipe has a portion of Brown Rice. Brown Rice is one of the most common grain ingredients and can provide this recipe with a modest portion of carbohydrates and fiber.
