Blue Seal Information
The Blue Seal company and its predecessors have been in operation since 1868. Since then, the Blue Seal brand has been known for its range of feeds for farm animals like Horses and Rabbits.
However, since the 1980s, they have also chosen to produce a range of products for traditional pets like dogs and cats. While this hasn’t become their primary focus, it is not an insignificant portion of their business.
Blue Seal is manufactured by Kent Nutrition Group Inc, which is based in Muscatine, Iowa. While Blue Seal does say that its products are produced in the United States, it isn’t clear exactly where their facilities are as their website does not list this information.
Blue Seal products can be purchased at physical Blue Seal stores, which are situated across the central and eastern United States.
Blue Seal products can not be purchased at most of the large online pet food sellers, such as Chewy. However, their products have been seen on Amazon on occasion.
Blue Seal Product Range
Dog Food
Blue Seal has a moderately sized dog food range, which is made up of solely dry dog food. These dry food recipes fall under three sub-brands: Entrust, Native, and Classics. Blue Seal does not produce any wet/canned recipes at this time.
Blue Seal produces several niche dog food recipes, including puppy food, senior dog food, and weight-loss food.
Blue Seal also produces “performance” dog food within its Native range. This range is aimed at highly active or working dogs and contains more suitable nutrition.
Cat Food
Blue Seal has a tiny cat food range which consists of three dry food recipes. Despite the small size of their range, one of their recipes is designed for kittens, which is the most popular sub-niche of cat food.
Blue Seal Nutrition
Dog Food
The nutrition offered by Blue Seal dog food varies significantly but is generally average to above-average.
Blue Seals Native range can provide the best nutrition, especially Native Level 3 and Level 4. In these recipes, the proportion of protein and fat is significantly above-average, and the proportion of carbohydrates is significantly below average.
The Entrust range, however, offers a more average nutritional profile. This is likely as this range is aimed at a lower price point, which results in fewer meat and fish ingredients.
Cat Food
The nutrition offered by Blue Seal cat food recipes is average, and the recipes contain average proportions of protein and fat. This protein and fat nutrition is combined with excessive proportions of carbohydrates.
Cats do not need a significant portion of carbohydrates in their diet as they obligate carnivores.
Blue Seal Ingredients
High-Quality Meat & Fish Ingredients
- Chicken
- Lamb
- Pork
Blue Seal makes use of a relatively small range of meat ingredients such as Chicken and Lamb.
Despite the small size of the range, the ingredients used are high-quality and can provide dogs and cats with high-quality animal-based protein.
They are regulars of the industry thanks to their affordable cost and the fact they are easy to source.
Blue Seal does not make use of any of the more uncommon or exotic meat or fish ingredients that are sometimes found in dog food.
Examples of these include Venison, Rabbit, and Kangaroo. You can read more about these in our Best Hypoallergenic Dog Foods Guide.
Other Notable Ingredients
Blue Seal makes use of a large range of grain ingredients in the bulk of its recipes. Examples of these grains include Barley, Corn, Wheat, Sorghum, Brown Rice, and Oats.
Grain ingredients such as these are a controversial addition to dog food, and many consumers refuse to purchase recipes containing grains, especially select grains such as Corn or Wheat.
However, some grains such as Brown Rice and Oats are looked upon more favorably as they are less processed and can often provide additional nutritional value.
Sadly, Blue Seal makes use of some lower-quality grain ingredients like Brewers Rice and Rice Bran. These are the remnants of the grain ingredients after processing.
Many dog owners look down upon these ingredients going as far as to call them “floor sweepings”. Read more in our articles Brewers Rice In Dog Food & Rice Bran In Dog Food.
Chicken Fat is added to dog food recipes to improve its flavor and boost the levels of animal-based fat.
Chicken Fat is chosen over alternatives as it is affordable and easy to source. Learn more about Chicken Fat in our article, Chicken Fat In Dog Food.
Beet Pulp features in select Blue Seal recipes. Beet Pulp is added to dog food as a source of soluble fiber.
Soluble fiber can be an important component for some dogs in order to maintain regular and consistent stools and digestion. You can read more about the use of Beet Pulp in our article Dried Beet Pulp In Dog Food.
Flaxseed is another regular addition to dog food. It is one of the best plant-based sources of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids.
These fatty acids are believed to provide several health benefits. Learn more about these benefits in our article, Flaxseed In Dog Food.
Blue Seal Animal Testing
At this time, we have no information on whether Blue Seal participates in invasive or laboratory testing of animals.
We strongly believe that laboratory or invasive testing of animals is a cruel and outdated practice. We hope that in the future, it will be eliminated.
Blue Seal Recalls
Based on our research (FDA, AVMA, DogFoodAdvisor), Blue Seal is a recall-free brand.
In 2007, some of their wet/canned products were being produced by Menu Foods, which underwent issues with melamine content, which caused them to recall certain ranges. However, despite this, the Blue Seal products were not recalled.
In addition, some of Blue Seal’s poultry feed products have been recalled, but the circumstances and context of this are quite different from pet food recalls.
This lack of recalls of pet food during their long history shows that they take the safety and quality of their manufacturing process seriously.
Despite being recall-free, we always ask that pet owners are vigilant of any future recalls of Blue Seal or any other pet food brand.

Native Level 3 Review
Check Price On Amazon
Native Level 3 is one of Blue Seal’s performance recipes. This performance label means that the recipe is aimed and best suited for more active dogs as well as those who are working dogs.
This suitability comes from an increased proportion of protein and fat when compared to Blue Seal’s other recipes. As the packaging displays, this recipe contains 30% protein and 20%, which is significantly above-average.
This nutritional profile is thanks to a generous portion of Chicken Meal. Chicken Meal is Chicken that has already had its moisture removed, causing it to be a more dense source of nutrition.
The recipe then uses a mix of Brewers Rice, Ground Barley, and Rice Bran to provide carbohydrates and fiber.
