TruDog Information
TruDog is a small dog food brand that specializes in freeze-dried and dehydrated dog food. They compete with several other much larger brands in this niche space, such as The Honest Kitchen and Ziwi Peak.
The brand was founded by Lori R. Taylor after her dog passed away at an early age. Lori discovered that the food she was feeding her dog was not a dog’s intended diet and was in fact, highly processed food.
For those of you curious where TruDog food is made, from our research, some of TruDog’s recipes are made in the USA, including their Feed Me, Boost Me, and Forty Me products.
However, not all of their recipes are made in the USA, and their Rawgo recipes are produced in New Zealand.
However, while many dog owners fear food produced outside of the United States, this should not be interpreted as a negative trait as safety and quality standards in New Zealand are extremely high.
TruDog can be purchased online from TruDog’s website, and the brand offers subscription-style services to pet owners who want to regularly purchase their products.
At this time, you can not purchase TruDog from any physical retail pet food stores or from some of the larger pet food websites like Chewy or Amazon.
TruDog Product Range
As mentioned earlier, TruDog specializes in the production of freeze-dried and dehydrated dog food and they have a moderately sized range of both of these niche dog food types.
However, TruDog also produce some other products including dog food toppers, treats, and supplements.
Given the specialty recipes they produce, TruDog does not have any food specifically for older dogs or puppies but many of their recipes are suitable for these age groups.
TruDog Nutrition
Given that the brand focuses on dehydrated and freeze-dried dog food, the nutrition their recipes offer is impressive and is above-average or significantly above-average when compared to most other dog food brands.
This above-average nutrition includes significant portions of protein and fat and modest proportions of carbohydrates.
You can see an example of this in the nutrition provided by one of their freeze-dried recipes.
As you can see, we estimate the recipe’s nutrition content is made up of 37% protein and 59% fat which sums to over 95% of the recipe’s calorie content.

TruDog Ingredients
High-Quality Meat & Fish Ingredients
- Beef
- Lamb
- Chicken
- Turkey
- Duck
- Whitefish
TruDog uses a moderately sized range of high-quality meat and fish ingredients in its recipes.
Many of these meat and fish ingredients, such as Chicken and Beef, are staples of the pet food industry. They are so popular among pet food manufacturers because they are easy to source and extremely nutritious.
In addition to these core meat and fish ingredients, TruDog’s Freeze-Dried recipes utilize some organ meat ingredients like Tripe, Lung, Liver, Heart, and Kidney.
This mix of organ meat ingredients can greatly enhance the flavor of a recipe and boost the levels of beneficial vitamins and minerals.
You can learn more about the use of organ meat ingredients in pet food recipes in our article Organ Meat Ingredients In Pet Food.
Other Notable Ingredients
Potatoes feature as the core plant-based ingredient in TruDog’s dehydrated dog food recipes.
Potatoes are a starch ingredient and an incredibly dense source of carbohydrates compared to some other plant-based ingredients.
For this reason, it is important that their portion size is tightly controlled within dog food recipes to stop the carbohydrate proportion from becoming excessive.
You can learn more about Potatoes and their use in dog food in our article Potatoes, Potato Protein & Potato Starch in Dog Food.
Canola Oil is a vegetable oil that is found in some pet food recipes, including several produced by TruDog.
Canola Oil boosts the level of fat in a recipe and can also be used as a binding agent to help hold food together in a consistent texture.
You can read more about the use of Canola Oil in Canola Oil In Dog Food.
TruDog Animal Testing
At this time, we have no information on whether TruDog participates in invasive or laboratory testing of animals.
Many smaller pet food brands avoid disclosing detailed information on their testing or trials as many fear backlash from their customers.
We strongly believe that laboratory or invasive testing of animals is a cruel and outdated practice. We hope that in the future, it will be eliminated.
TruDog Recalls
Based on our research (FDA, AVMA, DogFoodAdvisor), TruDog has not yet issued any recalls for its products and is, therefore, a recall-free dog food brand.
Given TruDog is a relatively small and young dog food brand, this recall-free record is not a great surprise, but nonetheless it is a beneficial trait.
Despite this recall-free record, we encourage all pet owners to be vigilant of any future recalls of TruDog or any other pet food brands to ensure your pets remain healthy and safe.
