Review Summary

Eden Country Cuisine is a high-quality dry dog food formula. Its nutrient profile is significantly above average and it provides an extremely high proportion of fat and a high proportion of protein. Eden provides some of the most nutritious dog food in the Uk and does so without sacrificing its quality. The formula contains a range of nutritious ingredients with a less common meat ingredients such as Duck, Venison, and Rabbit. Eggs and organ meat such as Liver are also included with the intention of adding beneficial minerals, vitamins, and additional protein. A small range of starchy vegetables are present in the formula, and they provide a satisfactory proportion of high-quality carbohydrates. In addition to their carbohydrate content, these ingredients contain fiber for healthy digestion. Eden Country Cuisine formula contains a small range of vegetables but a very large range of meat ingredients. For this reason, it is highly unlikely that it would be suitable for dogs with severe allergies or sensitivities. But for dogs without dietary issues, this is a fantastic formula which we would highly recommend.

Nutritional Analysis

The ideal nutrition for a dog is entirely dependant on their unique circumstances. However, a high proportion of protein and fat combined with a lower proportion of carbohydrates is most appropriate nutrition profile for the vast majority of dogs. Dog’s are very capable of consuming a high proportion of carbohydrates, but a diet high in protein and fat is more appropriate and a better reflection of their natural ancestral diet.

Eden 80/20 Country Cuisine Calorie Breakdown Chart

Carbohydrate Content Analysis

Dogs use carbohydrates as a simple energy source. Dogs do not require significant carbohydrates in their diet, and they are commonly added to reduce cost and increase shelf life. As the chart above displays, a maximum of 28% of Eden Country Cuisine calories are derived from carbohydrates.  Please note that this is the maximum amount of carbohydrates as calculated by the guaranteed analysis. In reality, this value of carbohydrates is likely to be a lot lower. This is significantly below average for a Dry Dog Food.

The carbohydrate proportion within Eden Country Cuisine formula appears to be sourced from a mix of starchy vegetables. This includes portions of Sweet Potatoes and Tapioca. Sweet Potatoes, in particular, are a high-quality carbohydrate ingredient and will be discussed later.

This is a satisfactory proportion of carbohydrates. While this proportion could be lower, it is suitable for the majority of dogs and lowering it further would provide little benefit.

Protein Content Analysis

Dogs use Protein for growth, development, and maintenance. Excess protein can be burned as calories. As the chart above displays, a minimum of 31% of Eden Country Cuisine calories are derived from protein. Please note that this is the minimum amount of protein as calculated by the guaranteed analysis. In reality, this value of protein is likely to be higher. This is significantly above average for a Dry Dog Food.

The proportion of protein present in the Eden Country Cuisine formula is high and is suitable for the majority of dogs including those who are active. However, it may not be sufficient for those who are very active.

A range of meat ingredients make up the majority of this protein content including Duck, Rabbit, Venison, and Lamb. All of these meat ingredients are considered high-quality sources of protein, containing the full range of amino acids required.

Fat Content Analysis

Dogs use fat as a concentrated energy source. In addition, fats also play a role in development and maintenance. As the chart above displays, a minimum of 41% of Eden Country Cuisine calories are derived from Fat. Please note that this is the minimum amount of fat as calculated by the guaranteed analysis. In reality, this value of fat is likely to be a lot higher. This is significantly above average for a Dry Dog Food.

This formula provides an extremely satisfactory proportion of fat, which could fuel the energy needs of dogs of all activity levels.

The sources of fat present are considered very high quality and consist of a range of poultry and meat fat. Fat from ingredients like Duck and Lamb is highly digestible and very suited to a dogs diet.

Sadly, without the inclusion of any fish ingredients the level of the Omega Fatty Acids in this formula isn’t particularly impressive.

Calorie Density

Calorie Density is essential to understand as it determines the portion size of food your dog will require per day or meal. Calorie Density is commonly measured in calories per kg or per cup.
Dog food formulas with high-calorie densities can be more cost efficient to purchase while recipes with lower calorie density can be advantageous to dogs attempting weight loss or who are relatively inactive.

Eden Country Cuisine contains an average of 3650 kCal/kg.

Disclaimer

Once again please note that the values in this section are calculated using the products guaranteed analysis. The guaranteed analysis only lists the minimum and maximum values, and as a consequence, these can sometimes be an inaccurate representation. As a rule of thumb, most dog foods will contain slightly more protein and considerably more fat than their guaranteed analysis. This will have the knock-on effect of reducing the relative amount of carbohydrates present. However also note that every dog food is different and some will be considerably closer to the guaranteed analysis than others.

In-Depth Meat/Fish Ingredient Review

The meat and fish ingredients of dog food are without a doubt the most important. They are critical as they provide the majority of the protein and fat that dogs desperately need. Also, these ingredients would have made up the bulk of dogs ancestors diet. Therefore, the quality of a dog food formulas meat and fish ingredients is crucial. Eden Country Cuisine contains five sources of meat or fish.

The primary meat source present is Duck. Duck is a considered a high-quality source of protein. It contains considerably higher levels of selenium and phosphorus than other meats. Unfortunately, Duck does contain a high concentration of water. Much of this water is evaporated during the cooking process leaving a lesser proportion of Duck. However given that Duck is the first listed ingredient, its proportion will still be relatively high after the cooking process.

Another meat source present is Lamb. Lamb is considered a high-quality source of protein. Just like Beef, lamb is rich in iron. In addition to this, it has higher levels of the Omega 3 Fatty Acid than other red meats and high levels of Vitamin B12. Unfortunately, just like Beef and Pork, Lamb contains a high concentration of water. Much of this water is evaporated during the cooking process leaving a lesser proportion of Lamb. However given that Lamb is not one of the primary ingredients, its proportion will be relatively low after the cooking process.

Another meat source present is Rabbit. Rabbit is considered a high-quality source of protein. Rabbit contains high levels of the Vitamins B3 and B12. Unfortunately, Rabbit does contain a high concentration of water. Much of this water is evaporated during the cooking process leaving a lesser proportion of Rabbit. However given that Rabbit is not one of the primary ingredients, its proportion will be relatively low after the cooking process.

Another meat source present is Venison. Venison is considered a high-quality source of protein. Venison has lower levels of saturated fat than other red meats. It also contains a similar range of vitamins and minerals such as Iron and Vitamin B6. Unfortunately, Venison does contain a high concentration of water. Much of this water is evaporated during the cooking process leaving a lesser proportion of Venison. However given that Venison is not one of the primary ingredients, its proportion will be relatively low after the cooking process.

Eggs are a highly nutritious pet food ingredient and are considered a high-quality source of protein. Eggs contain a vast variety of vitamins and minerals including Vitamin A, Vitamin B2 and B12, Selenium, Phosphorus and many others. In addition to this, they contain a high proportion of protein and healthy fats such as the Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids.

In-Depth None-Meat Ingredient Review

Sweet Potatoes are a starchy vegetable and a source of complex carbohydrates.  Sweet Potatoes are considered superior to traditional Potatoes as they contain more fiber and a more extensive range of vitamins and minerals. Some examples of vitamins and minerals that are abundant in Sweet Potatoes are Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Calcium. The higher amount of fiber and the range of micronutrients in Sweet Potatoes mean that they are considered a high-quality ingredient despite containing mostly carbohydrates.

Tapioca is a starchy vegetable and a source of complex carbohydrates. Tapioca, which is also known as Cassava Root, is a staple of South America and is rarely seen in the western world. This means it is often used as a novel ingredient for dogs with allergies or sensitivities to other ingredients such as Peas and Potatoes. Tapioca does not contribute substantial nutrition beyond its carbohydrate content but does contain the some B Vitamins such as Folate and the Vitamin B6.

Chickpeas are members of the legume family of vegetables. Legumes are famous for having a relatively high amount of protein for a vegetable. Legumes also contain a high amount of fiber, which is essential for healthy digestion. Pet foods often use legumes as a replacement for grains in grain-free pet food. Protein from vegetables such as legumes should not be a replacement for protein from meat. Instead, it should act as an additional protein source. As far as carbohydrate sources go, Legumes are considered one of the better sources.
