Grreat Choice Information
Grreat Choice is a store brand of the large retail pet food chain PetSmart. Grreat Choice has been a staple of Petsmart store shelves for many years.
Grreat Choice dog and cat food products are produced for PetSmart by a third-party manufacturer called Simmons Global Pet Food. Simmons Global Pet Food’s facilities are located in the United States in locations like Arkansas.
Because Grreat Choice is a store brand, you can only purchase it from PetSmart stores and from PetSmart’s website.
Grreat Choice Product Range
Dog Food
Grreat Choice has a moderate range of dog food products which is evenly split between dry dog food and wet/canned dog food.
All of Grreat Choice’s dog food recipes are grain-inclusive, and they do not produce any grain-free food.
There are some specialized recipes within the Grreat Choice range, including a puppy recipe and a high-protein recipe.
Cat Food
Grreat Choice’s cat food range is of a similar size to their dog food range and is a mix of dry cat food and wet/canned cat food.
Once again, all Grreat Choice recipes use grain ingredients are therefore not grain-free.
Grreat Choice has two specialized cat food recipes, which are a recipe for indoor cats and a recipe for kittens.
Grreat Choice Nutrition
Dog Food
Sadly, the nutrition offered by Grreat Choice dog food recipes is not impressive and would be classed as below-average when compared to other dog food brands.
This below-average nutritional profile consists of small proportions of protein and fat and large proportions of carbohydrates.
You can see an example of the nutrition offered by a Grreat Choice dry dog food recipe below.
If you would like to learn more about canine nutrition, we highly recommend you check out our Dog Food Guide.
Cat Food
Unfortunately, Grreat Choice cat food recipes offer similar nutrition as the dog food recipes, which is below-average when compared to other cat food brands.
This nutritional profile consists of low levels of protein and fat and excessive proportions of carbohydrates.
It is vital that cats have a diet high in animal or fish-based ingredients as they are obligate carnivores.

Grreat Choice Ingredients
High-Quality Meat & Fish Ingredients
- Chicken
- Beef
- Lamb
Grreat Choice uses a small selection of high-quality meat ingredients in its recipes, including the above. Ingredients like these can act as high-quality sources of animal-based protein and fat.
Sadly, the ingredients are usually not present in Grreat Choice recipes in high quantities and therefore labeled far down the ingredient list.
Some Grreat Choice recipes utilize meat by-products like Chicken By-Product Meal or Poultry By-Product Meal. While these ingredients may not be aesthetically pleasing, they can still provide valuable nutrition to pets.
Other Notable Ingredients
Grreat Choice utilizes a large range of grain ingredients in its recipes, including Corn, Wheat Middlings, Soybean Meal, Wheat, Brewers Rice, and Corn Gluten Meal.
Grain ingredients like these are controversial additions to pet food recipes, with pet owners refusing to feed grain-inclusive food.
However, there are also strong supporters of their use, especially among owners who feed brands like Purina Pro Plan or Royal Canin.
Regardless of opinion, grain ingredients such as these can provide nutrition in the form of carbohydrates, plant-based protein, and fiber.
Sadly, Grreat Choice uses some grain by-products in their recipes like Wheat Middlings, Brewers Rice, and more. These ingredients are even more controversial and are waste or leftover products from other grain product production.
Sadly, Grreat Choice makes extensive use of unnamed meat ingredients like Meat And Bone Meal, Meat By-Products, and Animal Fat.
While these ingredients may provide some nutrition in the form of protein and fat, they are unaccountable and not transparent.
This lack of transparency means that pet owners can not be certain what meat ingredients go into them, and the manufacturer could change them without informing consumers or altering packaging.
Flaxseed is a regular feature in recipes from premium pet food brands, so its inclusion in some Grreat Choice recipes is somewhat of a surprise. Flaxseed is an excellent plant-based source of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids.
These fatty acids can provide a range of health benefits to dogs and cats, including an improvement in the condition of skin, coats, and fur.
However, Flaxseed does have some other benefits that many are unaware of. If you’d like to learn more about Flaxseed and its benefits, check out our article Flaxseed In Dog Food.
Dried Beet Pulp is utilized by pet food manufacturers as a source of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber can be a critical component of a dog’s diet to help ensure they keep regular stools and digestion.
Outside of this fiber content, Dried Beet Pulp provides very little nutrition to dogs or cats. If you’d like to learn more about Dried Beet Pulp and where it comes from, read our article Dried Beet Pulp In Dog Food.
Brewers Yeast is found in some dog food recipes and is used as some believe it can provide health benefits and beneficial vitamins and minerals. However, these benefits are not proven, and some doubt them.
You can learn more about these benefits in our article Brewers Yeast In Dog Food.
Guar Gum and Carrageenan are both binding agents and are regular features in wet/canned dog or cat food.
Binding agents are important to hold the ingredients together and give the food a consistent texture and appearance.
You can learn more about Carrageenan and where it comes from in our article Carrageenan In Dog Food.
Grreat Choice Animal Testing
At this time, we have no information on what type of animal testing Grreat Choice participates in and whether this is invasive or laboratory.
Many pet food brands are hesitant to disclose any information related to testing or feeding trials as they fear customer backlash.
We strongly believe that invasive or laboratory-style testing of animals is a cruel and outdated practice and one which we hope will see a significant decline.
Grreat Choice Recalls
Based on our research (FDA, AVMA, DogFoodAdvisor), Grreat Choice does have at least one recall which means that they are not a recall-free brand.
In February 2017, PetSmart issued a recall for its Grreat Choice Adult Dog food due to possible metal contamination.
Contamination by foreign objects like metal is a common cause of recall and is important as these foreign objects can cause choking or other damage.
The specific Grreat Choice recipe affected by this recall was Grreat Choice Adult Dog Food With Chicken & Rice Classic Ground, 13.2 oz. cans (UPC 7-3725726116-7, Best-By Date 08/05/19, Lot 1759338).
We hope that PetSmart and their third-party manufacturing partners can improve the quality and safety processes that take place during their production to ensure there are no further recalls of Grreat Choice in the future.
Despite this, we always encourage pet owners to be vigilant of any future recalls of Grreat Choice or any other pet food brands.

I would like to know why the Grreat Choice Pup Puffs in the red bag are no longer available My dog and granddogs loved them and they were low in calories!
PetSmart has stopped selling the Great Choice brand pet foods. For two years, I have been buying the Complete dry cat food to feed to a neighborhood female tuxedo cat that recognized me as a “patsy” and comes for breakfast and dinner every single day of every single week. Even my own cats love it, so I’ve been giving it to them too, though they get much better quality food every day. I recently ran out of Great Choice and went to Petsmart to get more and they told me they no longer carry it. I bought Purina instead and neither the tuxedo nor my own cats like it.
