Purina Pro Plan Information

Purina Pro Plan is probably the best-known pet food brand from the Purina group. Other Purina brands include Purina One, Purina BenefulPurina Dog Chow, and Purina Beyond, but there are many more.

Originally Purina was a mostly independent brand owned by the Ralston Purina group. However, in 2001, Ralston Purina was acquired by Nestle, which is one of the biggest food and beverage companies in the world.

This merger was very controversial, with many Purina fans and advocates being unhappy with it due to ethical concerns surrounding Nestle, such as their use of child labor and exploitation of the environment.

Regardless of this, Nestle still controls Purina to this today and has enabled them to grow to new heights and release several more sub-brands.

Purina Pro Plan, along with the other Purina brands, is produced at Purina’s dedicated manufacturing facilities across the United States.

However, Purina does not openly publish where these facilities are but based on our research, we believe there are manufacturing facilities owned by Purina in Fort Dodge, IowaFlagstaff, ArizonaSt. Joseph, MissouriAllentown, Pennsylvania, and Hartwell, Georgia.

For those of you interested in buying or trialing Purina Pro Plan, you will be happy to know the brand is available from thousands of pet food stores across the United States and the world.

Purina Pro Plan is also commonly available from local veterinary practices, especially those Purina Pro Plan recipes for specific health issues like allergies or weight loss.

You can also purchase much of Purina Pro Plan’s range online from some of the large pet food websites like ChewyPetflow, and Amazon.

Purina Pro Plan Product Range

Dog Food

Purina Pro Plan has one of the largest range of dog food products of any brand. This range includes an even mix of dry dog food recipes and wet/canned dog food recipes.

Many of Purina Pro Plan’s wet dog food recipes mimic or are extremely similar to their dry dog food counterparts. This can be advantageous to some dogs who want a variety of wet and dry dog food but struggle to find suitable food.

In addition to their general mix of dry and wet food, Purina Pro Plan has several sub-brands, which include their Sport range, Focus range, and Bright Mind range.

When these are combined, Purina Pro Plan complete range includes many specialized recipes such as those for certain age ranges, like puppies and senior dogs, size-specific recipes for small, large, or giant breed dogs; and finally, many recipes for health issues such as sensitive skin & stomach or weight management.

These recipes for specific health issues are worth re-iterating as they are some of the most popular in the industry. This is thanks to the huge volume of research and development Purina performs to perfect these recipes.

The below recipe that aims to address sensitive Skin & Stomachs is one of the most popular.

Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach Salmon & Rice

However, it is also important to point out that many of these specialized recipes for health issues are part of Purina’s Veterinary Diets range.

While many may think that these recipes are interchangeable or similar, they are definitely not, and they need to be properly explained.

Unlike most of Purina Pro Plan’s recipes, formulas from this range can only be sold to pet owners with a prescription from a veterinary professional. The below Gastroenteric recipe is a prime example of this.

Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Gastroenteric

The reasoning behind these recipes requiring a prescription is that these recipes are tailor-made for these health issues, and an incorrect prescription or misdiagnosis could worsen or cause health issues.

However, while these products do require a veterinary prescription, once this has been acquired, they can be bought from larger pet food stores or websites rather than directly through veterinary practices.

Lastly, Purina Pro Plan does not produce any breed-specific dog food recipes as some competitor brands do, such as Royal Canin

While many call into question the need or benefit of breed-specific dog food, there are some dog owners who think they are beneficial and justified.

Cat Food

Purina Pro Plan’s cat food range is equally impressive in size and is one of the largest product ranges of any brand we have researched to date.

Similar to the dog food range, Purina Pro Plan has some sub-brands of Purina Pro Plan, including Focus, LiveClear, and Savor.

When all of these ranges are combined, Purina Pro Plan produces a large mix of dry cat food and wet/canned cat food, with the latter having more variety available.

Purina Pro Plan produces some age-specific cat food such as recipes for Kittens and Senior cats and recipes for specific health issues like hairball management, weight management, and sensitive skin.

Once again, in a similar fashion to their dog food products, Purina Pro Plan’s recipes for specific health issues are extremely popular and some of the industry’s most researched and tested.

The below Indoor Hairball is an excellent example and is one of the most popular hairball combating recipes available.

Purina Pro Plan Indoor Hairball Salmon & Rice

Purina Pro Plan does not produce any breed-specific cat food recipes. While some brands, such as Royal Canin, do produce breed-specific cat food, it is extremely rare, and Purina Pro Plan is not the odd one out.

Purina Pro Plan Nutrition

Dog Food

Given their huge product range, the nutrition offered by Purina Pro Plan varies significantly from recipe to recipe.

There are some Purina Pro Plan recipes that have nutrition that is below average compared to other dog food brands, but there are also other recipes that have nutrition that would be considered above-average or significantly above-average.

This variety in nutritional value is especially true when you consider that many of Purina Pro Plan’s recipes are designed for dogs with severe health issues.

For these dogs with severe health issues, optimal or high levels of animal-based protein and fat come second to their health issues.

Below is an example of the nutrition provided by one of Purina Pro Plan’s better dry dog food recipes.

Purina Pro Plan Example Nutrition

As you can see, the proportion of protein and fat is significant and makes up the bulk of the recipe. However, the carbohydrates proportion is still considerable.

If you would like to learn more about canine nutrition, we highly recommend you check out our Dog Food Guide. This guide discusses all aspects of dog food, including nutrition, ingredients, dog food types, and more.

Cat Food

The principles and concepts relating to nutrition discussed above also apply to Purina Pro Plan’s cat food recipes.

Some of these cat food recipes offer nutrition that is average or below average when compared to other cat food brands, while others offer nutrition that is impressive and far above-average compared to the industry average.

You can see the below example of the nutrition offered by a Purina Pro Plan wet cat food recipe.

Purina Pro Plan Example Cat Food Nutrition

As you can see, the nutrition offered by this recipe is extremely impressive, with protein and fat making up 90% of the nutritional content. The portion of carbohydrates is very small and in line with a cat’s natural diet.

While there are some unique health issues that can influence a cat’s diet, the majority of cats will thrive best on a diet high in animal-based protein and fat and without excessive levels of plant-based content.

This is as cats are obligate carnivores which means that their digestive system is not designed to digest large quantities of plant matter, and they excel on a diet of animal or fish-based ingredients.

If you would like to learn more about feline nutrition and a more detailed explanation of what an Obligate Carnivore is, then be sure to check out our Cat Food Guide.

Purina Pro Plan Ingredients

High-Quality Meat & Fish Ingredients

  • Chicken
  • Turkey
  • Duck
  • Salmon
  • Tuna
  • Beef
  • Lamb

Purina Pro Plan uses a moderate range of high-quality meat and fish ingredients in its recipes, most of which are listed above.

These ingredients are high-quality sources of animal or fish-based protein and fat, which should be at the core of every dog or cat’s diet.

Many of these ingredients are industry favorites, such as Chicken, Turkey, Beef, and Salmon. These ingredients are so popular among pet food manufacturers as they are easy to source, highly nutritious, and affordable.

Purina Pro Plan makes less use of uncommon or unique meat and fish ingredients in its recipes compared to some other brands. Ingredients like Venison, Kangaroo, and Rabbit are often found in recipes for pets with severe allergies.

You can learn more about these unique ingredients and why they are used in our Best Hypoallergenic Dog Foods Guide.

Venison

Some Purina Pro Plan recipes include small portions of organ meat like Liver. Organ meat ingredients like these can be excellent additions to pet food recipes and enhance their flavor as well as provide some beneficial vitamins and minerals.

Other Notable Ingredients

Purina Pro Plan uses a large range of grain ingredients in its recipes, including Barley, Rice, Oat Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, and Wheat.

Grain ingredients like these can be controversial additions to pet food recipes, with many pet owners being strongly against their use. However, some pet owners, especially fans of Purina Pro Plan, are strong supporters of grain-inclusive recipes the use of grain ingredients.

Regardless of opinion, these grain ingredients are used by Purina Pro Plan to provide a mix of nutrition in the form of carbohydrates, plant-based protein, fiber, and select vitamins and minerals.

You can learn more about some of these grain ingredients in the below articles.

Barley In Dog Food

Beef Fat is found in many pet food recipes and is included to boost the overall levels of animal fat and to improve flavor. However, Chicken Fat is often favored over Beef Fat by many brands as it can be easier and more affordable to source.

You can learn more about Chicken Fat in our article Chicken Fat In Dog Food.

Sadly, Purina Pro Plan uses some unnamed meat ingredients in their recipes, such as Meat By-Products. Unnamed meat ingredients like this are generally looked down upon as they are unaccountable and not transparent.

Despite the fact that they can provide some valuable nutrition in the form of protein and fat, these ingredients could be modified or altered by manufacturers without altering the ingredient list or informing pet owners.

Sunflower Oil is a vegetable oil that is sometimes found in pet food recipes. Sunflower Oil can be used to boost overall levels of fat and can also be used to help bind food together.

You can read more about Sunflower Oil in our article Sunflower Oil In Dog Food.

Sunflowers

Dried Beet Pulp is one of the most popular additions to pet food recipes and is used by many of the larger brands as a source of soluble fiber.

Soluble fiber can be a critical component of some dogs’ diets to ensure they keep regular stools and digestion.

However, outside of this fiber content, Dried Beet Pulp provides very little nutrition to dogs or cats, with a complete lack of protein, carbohydrates, or fiber.

You can learn more about Dried Beet Pulp, including how it’s made, in our article Dried Beet Pulp In Dog Food.

Sugar Beet

While not widely seen, some Purina Pro Plan recipes include Pea By-Products like Pea Protein.

Pea Protein is a concentrated plant-based protein and is often used by grain-free pet food brands to boost the overall level of protein in a pet food recipe without including additional animal or fish-based ingredients.

Plant-based protein, such as Pea Protein, is almost universally considered to be inferior to animal-based protein and does not contain the full range of needed amino acids.

In addition, there have been growing concerns in recent years about the high use of Peas and Legumes in dog food and an increased rate of Canine Heart Disease.

While the portion of Pea ingredients found in Purina Pro Plan recipes is not significant or worthy of concern, you can learn more about this alarming subject in our article Best Dog Foods Without Peas.

Peas In A Pod

Guar Gum is an extremely common minor ingredient in wet/canned pet food and is used as a binding agent. While not all of Purina’s wet food recipes contain Guar Gum, many do.

Binding agents, like Guar Gum, hold the ingredients of food together in a consistent texture and appearance but usually do not provide any noticeable nutrition themselves (such as carbohydrates, protein, or fat).

Powdered Cellulose is a very controversial ingredient in pet food recipes and is found in a select few Purina Pro Plan recipes.

In short, Powdered Cellulose is pure fiber (or Cellulose) that is derived from plant matter, and while this may not sound bad at first, there is a catch.

Unlike other fiber-providing ingredients like Tomato Pomace and Beet Pulp, Powdered Cellulose is far less specific and can be produced from almost any plant matter.

Classic examples include the leftover plant matter from Corn or Sugarcane plants, and in extreme cases, it can be produced from trees that are processed in mills.

You can learn more about Powdered Cellulose in our article Powdered Cellulose In Dog Food.

Cellulose

Purina Pro Plan Animal Testing

Purina Pro Plan is a pet food brand with far more information available around their testing and feed trials than most pet food brands. Despite this, Purina is not fully transparent or open about its testing and feeding trials.

Thanks to its size and history, Purina is one of a select number of brands that have pets that live on-site at its development and research facilities.

These pets are fed Purina recipes, and then their health and wellbeing are closely monitored. This can include inspecting their skin, coat, and fur, sampling their stools and monitoring their weight. Some of these pets also undergo blood sampling.

While many strongly agree with the idea of pets living at a research facility, Purina is adamant that these pets maintain a high quality of life and are not subject to any invasive or cruel practices.

Many other pet food brands avoid disclosing any information about their testing and feeding trials due to fears about customer backlash.

Some in the industry are concerned that some smaller brands are not completing sufficient testing or trials, and their food could be unsafe for long-term consumption.

We strongly believe that invasive or laboratory testing of animals for the pet food industry is a cruel and outdated practice and one which we hope will see a significant decline.

Purina Pro Plan Recalls

Based on our research (FDA, AVMA, DogFoodAdvisor), Purina Pro Plan has had recalls over its history and is therefore not a recall-free brand.

Given that Purina has been in operation for over 100 years, there have been many recalls and scares. We are going to focus on recalls that have taken place since the turn of the century.

In March 2016, Purina Pro Plan issued a recall due to inadequate levels of some vitamins and minerals. While not as concerning as foreign contamination or the presence of dangerous chemicals, an unbalanced vitamin and minerals profile is still important.

Pets who consume a diet with an inappropriate balance for a sustained period of time can experience health issues. Thankfully this recall only affected a small number of Purina Pro Plan wet dog food recipes with best before dates ranging from June 2017 to August 2017 and with a production code range between 5363 to 6054.

Pro Plan Savory Meals, 10oz. tubs – Braised Chicken Entrée, Braised Pork Entrée, Braised Turkey Entrée, Grilled Salmon Entrée, Braised Beef & Rice Entrée

Despite the above recall from Purina Pro Plan, the brand is considered to have some of the strongest and complete safety and quality procedures. We hope that these will help Purina Pro Plan minimize any future recalls of their products.

It is also worth noting that many of the other Purina brands have undergone recalls in the recent past for a variety of reasons, such as Salmonella Contamination, Flawed Packaging, and others.

We’ve recommended checking out some of our other Purina brand review pages for details which you can find below.

Purina Alpo Brand Review

Regardless, we always encourage pet owners to be vigilant of any future recalls of Purina Pro Plan or any other pet food brands.

Best of Purina Pro Plan

All Life Stages Performance 30/20 Chicken & Rice Review

Purina Pro Plan Performance Chicken

The above Performance recipe from Purina Pro Plan is one of our favorites and is best suited to very active dogs who have a high demand for protein and fat.

Classic examples of dogs that thrive on a recipe like this are working dogs, competition dogs, or those with high levels of exercise.

The recipe’s most abundant ingredient is Chicken, which can provide a more than suitable portion of high-quality animal-based protein and fat.

This Chicken is joined by a smaller portion of Beef Fat, Poultry By-Product Meal, Egg Product, and Fish Meal.
While not as preferred as Chicken, these minor animal-based ingredients further contribute to the overall levels of animal-based protein and fat.

The plant-based ingredients in the recipe are a mix of Corn ingredients, like Corn Gluten Meal, Whole Grain Corn, and Corn Germ Meal, and Rice.

While some in the industry frown upon grain ingredients such as these, fans of Purina Pro Plan believe they are well suited to the digestive system of dogs.

They would argue that Corn is a nutritionally dense ingredient that can provide carbohydrates, plant-based protein, and select vitamins and minerals to dogs.

While many brands also include some minor ingredients like Flaxseed or Brewers Yeast, this recipe does not contain these or any other similar ingredients.

Adult Sensitive Skin & Stomach Salmon & Rice Formula Review

Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach Salmon & Rice

The above Purina Pro Plan recipe for dogs with sensitive skin and stomachs is the most popular recipe sold on Chewy by a considerable margin.

The recipe’s primary meat ingredient is Salmon which is a fantastic addition to any dog food recipe. Salmon acts as a high-quality source of fish-based protein and fat.

Also, Salmon is one of the most consistent sources of the beneficial Omega 3 Fatty Acids. These fatty acids are thought to provide several health benefits to dogs, including an improvement in the condition of skin and coats, which are often affected by allergies.

Outside of this Salmon, this recipe utilizes a small mix of grain ingredients such as Barley, Rice, and Oat Meal.

These grain ingredients act as dense sources of nutrition and can contribute a mix of carbohydrates, plant-based protein, fiber, and more.

An important point to make is that these grain ingredients are preferred by many to lower-cost grains like Corn and Wheat.

This preference is as fewer dogs have a negative reaction to these grains, which is a critical trait for a recipe for dogs with sensitive skin to stomachs.

While many would expect specialized dog food recipes like the above to come in at a high price point, they are surprisingly affordable in comparison to other similar brands, with a 30-pound bag usually costing around $50.

Complete Essentials Adult Beef & Vegetables Entrees Slices In Gravy

Purina Pro Plan Complete Essentials Beef & Vegetables

Purina Pro Plan’s Complete Essential range of wet/canned dog food is by far their most popular. There is an expansive range including recipes with several different meat and fish ingredients like Beef, Chicken, Lamb, and Turkey.

The above Beef recipe is one of our favorites and contains a substantial portion of Beef, Chicken, and Liver as its meat ingredients.

The combination of these ingredients contributes towards a satisfactory nutritional profile that includes 9% protein and 2.5% fat.

Outside of these meat ingredients, this Complete Essential recipe includes small portions of Wheat Gluten, Carrots, Corn, Potatoes, and Green Beans.

This larger range of plant-based ingredients provides texture to the recipe as well as a moderate proportion of carbohydrates, fiber, and more.

While wet or canned dog food tends to be much more costly than dry dog food, the Complete Essentials range is surprisingly affordable, with a 12 pack of 13-oz cans coming in at just over $20.

LiveClear Sensitive Skin & Stomach Turkey & Oatmeal Formula Review

Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach Turkey & Oatmeal Formula Cat Food

The Purina Pro Plan LiveClear cat food range is relatively new compared to others that have been around for decades, but this new range has quickly become popular.

It focuses on cats with health issues such as sensitive stomachs and digestive systems, which could make it an ideal choice for older cats or those with regular health problems.

Chicken and Turkey are the recipe’s primary two ingredients and act as a stable base of animal-based protein and fat.

While many cat food recipes for health issues tend to provide poor nutrition, it is the opposite for this recipe from Purina Pro Plan, and it includes a minimum of 40% protein and 18% fat which is excellent.

Outside of this poultry content, the recipe utilizes a mix of Pea Protein, Rice, Oat Meal, and other plant-based ingredients to provide a portion of carbohydrates, plant-based protein, and fiber.

Savor Adult Salmon & Wild Rice Entree Classic Review

Purina Pro Plan Savor Adult Salmon & Wild Rice Classic Cat Food

While there are several wet cat food recipes from Purina Pro Plan more popular than the above, this recipe stood out for us for having more impressive nutrition and ingredient quality than most.

The formula is Salmon-based, and Salmon is the recipe’s most abundant ingredient. As we regularly mention, Salmon is an excellent choice for a pet food recipe and contains a plentiful supply of high-quality protein and fat.

Outside of this Salmon, the recipe uses a much smaller portion of Liver, By-Products, as well as a tiny portion of Chicken.

While we’d prefer more named meat ingredients, these are found in almost all of Purina Pro Plan’s wet cat food recipes and do help to provide some additional protein and fat.

The overall proportion comes in at 10% protein and 5% fat, respectively which is far above average for a wet cat food recipe.

This formula then uses a very small portion of Wild Rice to provide a modest proportion of carbohydrates and fiber.
