Millies Wolfheart Information

Millies Wolfheart is a premium pet food brand based in the United Kingdom. The brand was established in 2011 in the Yorkshire Dales by Mark and June, and it remains a family-run business.

The brand focuses on using high-quality ingredients and providing a diet high in animal-based protein and fat.

As we will discuss later, their quality and nutrition is leaps and bounds above many of the traditional UK-based dog food brands.

All of their recipes are produced locally in Yorkshire, in the United Kingdom, and they do not outsource production.

Millies Wolfheart is sold at select physical pet food stores across the United Kingdom, but they do not feature at most of the larger branded stores. You can use this page on their website to see all of these stores.

However, if there isn’t a stockist closeby, you can purchase Millies Wolfheart online from their website.

Millies Wolfheart Product Range

Dog Food

Millies Wolfheart has an expansive dog food range. This range includes both dry dog food (also known as kibble) and wet/canned dog food recipes.

The dry food range is the larger of the two and includes recipes with a large variety of meat, fish, and vegetable ingredients.

Many of these core meat and fish ingredients are uncommon and not used by traditional brands. Examples would include Rabbit, Goat, and Boar.

Millies Wolfheart has a unique naming scheme that gives pet owners a clear indication of how much meat or fish is in each recipe, which you can see below. An example would be the Hunter Mix recipe, which contains 80% meat or fish ingredients.

While the wet/canned food range is smaller than the dry range, there is still a notable variation in the meat and fish ingredients they utilize. Some of the wet recipes match or mimic dry food recipes, allowing owners to provide consistency.

Millies Wolfheart Product Range

Cat Food

The cat food range from Millies Wolfheart is very small and consists of four recipes. Two of these are dry cat food recipes, and the other two are wet cat food recipes.

Despite the small size of the cat food range, these recipes keep the same standards that the dog food range sets and use a variety of high-quality and often uncommon meat and fish ingredients.

Millies Wolfheart Nutrition

Dog Food

The nutrition provided by Millies Wolfheart recipes varies. However, most of their recipes provide nutrition that is significantly above average when compared to recipes from comparable brands.

This significantly above-average nutritional profile includes significantly above average proportions of animal-based protein and fat.

Some of Millies Wolfheart recipes provide extremely satisfactory nutrition, including the 80/20, 75/25, and 70/30 recipes. These have sufficient protein and fat for extremely active dogs such as sport dogs or working dogs.

However, dogs that are not active may want to avoid these high protein/fat recipes to avoid weight gain or obesity issues.

Below is an example of the nutrition provided by a Millies Wolfheart dry dog food recipe. As you can see, the protein and fat proportion are very impressive and far above average.

Millies Wolfheart Example Nutrition

Cat Food

Given that Millies Wolheart’s cat food range is tiny, there is not much variety in the nutrition it provides.

Thankfully the few recipes that Millies Wolfheart do produce all provide excellent nutrition. Their nutritional profile includes a very high proportion of protein and fat and a modest proportion of carbohydrates.

Cats are obligate carnivores, which means that they thrive best on a diet high in animal and fish-based protein and fat. They do not need to eat a significant amount of plant-based ingredients.

You can read more about cat nutrition in our Cat Food Guide.

Millies Wolfheart Ingredients

High-Quality Meat & Fish Ingredients

  • Chicken
  • Turkey
  • Duck
  • Salmon
  • Trout
  • Beef
  • Pork
  • Wild Boar
  • Lamb
  • Rabbit
  • Goat

Millies Wolfheart makes use of a huge range of meat and fish ingredients in its recipes. All of these meat and fish ingredients are high-quality and dense sources of animal-based protein and fat, which should be at the core of every dog or cat’s diet.

We are big fans of pet food brands that use fish ingredients like Salmon and Trout. Both of these fish ingredients are fantastic additions to any dog food recipe. Salmon is probably the most reliable source of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids, which many believe can provide several health benefits to dogs and cats.

Salmon Fillet

As we mentioned earlier, Millies Wolfheart uses some less common meat ingredients such as Rabbit and Goat.

These ingredients are often used in recipes designed for dogs with severe allergies or sensitivities. These recipes that utilize these ingredients can be known as Novel Meat formulas.

If you want to learn more about Novel Meat formulas, we recommend checking out our article Best Hypoallergenic Dog Foods Guide, or you can learn about the benefits of Rabbit meat for dogs in our article Best Dog Foods With Rabbit.

Other Notable Ingredients

Millies Wolfheart makes extensive use of all three of the most popular starch ingredients found in dog food – Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, and Tapioca.

These starch ingredients are extremely dense sources of carbohydrates, which means that their portion size must be tightly controlled.

They can also provide some additional nutrition in the form of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber.

Tapioca is not well known in the western world but is very popular in regions such as South America. It should not be feared and provides very similar nutrition to the better-known starches like Potatoes.

You can learn more about this ingredient and its use in dog food in our article Tapioca In Dog Food.

Tapioca

Millies Wolfheart uses significantly fewer legumes in its formulas than most other premium pet food brands, but some legumes such as Chickpeas are present.

Legumes are so popular among pet food manufacturers as they are relatively inexpensive and can provide carbohydrates, fiber, and a high proportion of protein for a plant-based ingredient.

You can learn more about Chickpeas in our article Chickpeas In Dog Food.

In recent years, there have been links between the high use of legumes, like Chickpeas, in dog food and increased rate of Canine Heart Disease. While to a lesser degree, starch ingredients have also been associated with this link.

You can read more about this here.

Chickpeas Close Up

Salmon Oil is present in some Millies Wolfheart recipes. Salmon Oil is one of the common oils used in dog food.

This is because it is highly nutritious and contains healthy fats such as the Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Many believe these fatty acids can provide several health benefits to dogs and cats.

Lucerne, which is also known as Alfalfa, is used in some Millies Wolfheart recipes. It is present in tiny quantities, which often places it far down the ingredient list. Alfalfa is used in dog food because some believe it can provide micronutrients and health benefits.

You can learn more about Alfalfa in our article Alfalfa In Dog Food.

Tomato Pomace is an inexpensive source of soluble fiber, which means it is used by many dog food brands to boost the fiber content of their recipes.

Soluble fiber, such as that found in Tomato Pomace, can be critical for some dogs to ensure they keep regular digestion and stools.

Beyond its fiber content, Tomato Pomace provides little nutritional value. If you’d like to learn more about Tomato Pomace, check out our article, Tomato Pomace, as a Pet Food Ingredient?.

Millies Wolfheart Animal Testing

Millies Wolfheart makes its stance on Animal Testing very clear on its website.

There it says, “the only animal testing we condone is our own dogs and cats who happily taste the delicious creations we make.  Have no fear, they thoroughly and willingly check the quality of our products for us.  Since we use nothing less than human-grade ingredients, further testing is unnecessary.

This is a relief for those who are concerned or take an interest in the welfare of animals.

However, critics of Millies Wolfheart would suggest that the brand may not carry out sufficient testing to ensure its recipes are safe to consume and provide adequate nutrition.

Some pet owners prefer to use food that has been heavily tested, such as those from brands like Purina Pro Plan and Royal Canin.

We strongly believe that testing on animals in a laboratory or invasive manner is an outdated and cruel practice and one which we hope will be eliminated in the near future.

Millies Wolfheart Recalls

Based on our research (FDA, AVMA, DogFoodAdvisor), we have no information that leads us to believe that Millies Wolfheart pet food has ever undergone a recall.

Given that Millies Wolfheart is still a relatively young brand, this is understandable, but it still shows that they take their safety and quality practices seriously.

We hope that Millies Wolfheart can maintain these high standards and remain a recall-free brand in the years to come.

We encourage all pet owners to be vigilant of any current or future recalls of Millies Wolfheart or any other pet food brand to ensure they can react effectively.

Best of Millies Wolfheart

Salmon & Veg Review

Millies Wolfheart Salmon & Veg

Salmon & Veg was Millies Wolfheart’s first high meat recipe, and despite the variety of their offerings increasing dramatically, it is still one of their best and most popular recipes.

It includes a huge portion of Fresh Salmon and Dried Salmon. This mix of Salmon ingredients provides a significantly above average proportion of protein and fat that would be well suited for most dogs, especially those that are more active.

In addition to its protein and fat content, this huge portion of Salmon provides an excellent level of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids.

The overall level comes in at a whopping 4.6%, which is one of the highest we’ve ever seen from any dog food recipe worldwide.

The recipe is rounded out with a mix of Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, and Tapioca. These three Starch ingredients provide a modest portion of carbohydrates and some dietary fiber.

Riverside Wet Review

Millies Wolfheart Riverside Wet Dog Food

While most dog owners stick with dry dog food, wet dog food should be considered, even if only occasionally. It can provide some much-needed variety in their diet, and many dogs love the rich taste.

Millies Wolfheart’s Riverside wet dog food formula is one of their best and utilizes a mix of Duck and Trout as its primary ingredients. Both of these are high-quality and extremely nutritious ingredients, high in protein and fat.

While Duck is a less common meat ingredient for human consumption, it is a regular addition in the dog food market, which is a surprise and can be particularly enjoyable to many dogs.

The recipe also includes a mix of vegetable ingredients, each in relatively small quantities. Examples include Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans, Parsnips, and Carrots.

Sweet Potatoes are a regular addition, but the others, such as Parsnips and Carrots, are rarely seen in pet food recipes.

Despite this, these ingredients are positive additions and can provide a satisfactory and modest proportion of carbohydrates along with a variety of micronutrients.

Lionheart Multi-Meat Review

Millies Wolfheart Lionheart Multi Meat Formula Cat Food

LionHeart Multi-Meat Formula from Millies Wolfheart makes use of a mix of game and red meats such as Duck, Rabbit, and Lamb.

While some of these ingredients are seeing increased use in dog food, their use in cat food is still limited, which makes this recipe quite unique.

Those meat ingredients provide a very satisfactory proportion of protein and fat for a dry cat food recipe, far above most other brand’s recipes.

Despite this, as with all dry cat food, there is a modest portion of carbohydrates present, which in an ideal world, would be avoided. These carbohydrates are from a portion of Sweet Potato.
