Nutrience Information
Nutrience is a longstanding Canadian dog food brand that has been in operation for over 30 years.
Nutrience is owned by Hagen, which is a conglomerate that owns a large number of pet-related brands.
Most of these brands focus on pet products for fish, dogs, and cats and not pet food. Some examples of other brands owned by Hagen include Zoë, Fluval, Exo Terra, and Zeus.
Nutrience recipes are made in British Columbia, Canada, and are produced in small batches, which is unusual for a brand as large as them. Nutrience proudly uses local ingredients in their recipes, which are sourced from British Columbia and other provinces in Canada.
Nutrience’s facility in British Columbia is classified as a Safe Food Quality Program level-3 facility. This means that they follow the highest possible standards for pet food production in Canada and carry out rigorous testing and safety measures.
Nutrience is available for purchase from hundreds of retail pet food stores across Canada, such as PetSmart.
Their recipes can also be purchased online from a variety of pet food websites like Homesalive and PetMax. Nutrience is not available from most of the Large US-based pet food sites like Chewy.
Nutrience Product Range
Dog Food
Nutrience has a substantial range of dog food products. This range includes traditional dry dog food, wet/canned dog food, raw dog food, and dog treats.
Nutrience splits its recipes into five distinct range’s which are SubZero, Care, Grain Free, Infusion, and Original.
Within these five ranges, there are grain-free and grain-inclusive recipes as well as age-specific and size-specific recipes like those for puppies and large breed dogs.
Nutrience also produces some recipes within its Care range for dogs with health problems such as Weight Management, Sensitive Skin, and Oral Health.
Cat Food
Nutrience’s cat food range is similar in size to their dog food range and, as such is substantial. Within this range, there is a mix of dry cat food, wet/canned cat food, and raw cat food.
The same ranges that we named in the dog food range are also present in the cat food recipes. This includes SubZero, Care, Grain Free, Infusion, and Original.
There are fewer niche recipes within the cat food range from Nutrience compared to the dog food range, but there are still some available. Examples of these include recipes for Kittens and for those cats with certain health concerns.
Nutrience Nutrition
Dog Food
Given Nutrience’s large product range, it will come as no surprise that their nutrition varies significantly.
That being said, many of Nutrience’s recipes offer very impressive nutrition that is significantly above-average when compared to other brands.
The best example of this is the Sub Zero range, which offers significantly above-average protein and fat proportions and significantly below-average proportions of carbohydrates.
Below is an example of the nutrition offered by a Sub Zero recipe.
However, recipes from Nutrience’s other range can still offer impressive nutrition. Most other recipe’s from Nutrience would be classed as above-average when compared to other dog food brands.
They provide above-average proportions of protein and fat and below-average proportions of carbohydrates.
Cat Food
Nutrience cat food is similar in nutrition to their dog food recipes. Some lower-cost recipes offer average nutrition, but there are also premium recipes from Nutrience that offer extremely satisfactory nutrition.
Below is an example of the nutrition provided by a Sub Zero dry cat food recipe.
Appropriate nutrition is extremely important for cats as they are obligate carnivores. This means that they thrive best on a diet that focuses on meat and fish ingredients, with little plant-matter.
You can learn more about Cat’s dietary requirements in our Cat Food Guide.
Nutrience premium recipes are close to this ideal and contain a minimal proportion of carbohydrates from plant-based ingredients.
Nutrience Ingredients
High-Quality Meat & Fish Ingredients
- Chicken
- Turkey
- Duck
- Lamb
- Salmon
- Herring
- Hake
- Cod
Nutrience uses a large range of meat and fish ingredients in its recipes, all of which are high-quality ingredients.
We’ve listed some of these above, but that isn’t all of them. Some of these are industry favorites like Chicken and Turkey, while others are less commonly seen, like Duck and Lamb.
Common ingredients like Chicken are so popular in the industry as they are low-cost and easy to source. Other ingredients like Lamb are far more costly and challenging to source.
It is worth noting that Nutrience uses a range of fish ingredients that is much more expansive than most other brands. Fish ingredients like Cod and Hake are rare sights in pet food recipes.
Other Notable Ingredients
Nutrience makes use of all three of the popular legume ingredients used in dog food. These are Peas, Lentils, and Chickpeas.
These legume ingredients provide carbohydrates, fiber, and a high level of protein for a plant-based ingredient. This nutrition, combined with their low cost, makes them appealing to manufacturers.
However, in the last few years, there has been a link between the high use of legumes in dog food recipes and an increased rate of canine heart disease.
If you want to learn more about this concerning link, you can read about it here.
Nutrience uses a moderate range of grain ingredients in its grain-inclusive recipes. Examples of these grain ingredients include Oats, Barley, and Brown Rice.
Grain ingredients are a controversial addition to pet food, with many pet owners being against their use.
However, these ingredients can provide carbohydrates, fiber, and select micronutrients. Also, the grains used by Nutrience are preferred by many to others like Wheat and Corn, as they are seen as less processed.
You can read more about Barley in our article Barley In Dog Food.
Sweet Potatoes are a starch ingredient that features in some Nutrience recipes. Sweet Potatoes are an extremely dense source of carbohydrates, which means their portion size must be tightly controlled. Thankfully the portion size used in most Nutrience recipes is not excessive.
Eggs are a beneficial addition to any pet food recipe. They can provide a full spectrum of nutrition, including protein, fat, carbohydrates, and more.
One advantage of Eggs over other ingredients is that they are extremely bioavailable, which means that they can be more easily absorbed by the digestive system.
Chicken Fat is used in pet food recipes to boost the proportion of animal fat and improve the recipe’s flavor. Chicken Fat is chosen over alternatives because of its low cost and high availability.
You can learn more about Chicken Fat in Chicken Fat In Dog Food.
Dried Beet Pulp is used by pet food manufacturers to provide soluble fiber. Soluble fiber can be a critical component of a dog’s diet and helps maintain regular and consistent digestion. Outside of its fiber content, Beet Pulp provides little to no nutritional value.
Read more about Beet Pulp in our article Dried Beet Pulp In Dog Food.
Pumpkin is another excellent source of dietary fiber but what makes Pumpkin stand out is that it can offer additional nutrition beyond this. It also provides carbohydrates and select vitamins and minerals like Beta Carotene.
You can learn more about Pumpkin and its benefits in Best Dog Food With Pumpkin.
Flaxseed is known as one of the best plant-based sources of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids, which is why it is so often included in pet food.
These fatty acids are believed by many to provide several health benefits, such as an improvement in the condition of a dog’s skin and coat.
If you want to know more about Flaxseed, check out Flaxseed In Dog Food.
Alfalfa is included in pet food recipes in tiny quantities, but despite this, it can still provide benefits. Alfalfa is an excellent source of many vitamins and minerals and acts to boost these in recipes as a whole.
You can read more about Alfalfa in Alfalfa In Dog Food.
Nutrience Animal Testing
At this time, we have no information on whether Nutrience participates in invasive or laboratory testing of animals.
We strongly believe that laboratory or invasive testing of animals is a cruel and outdated practice. We hope that in the future, it will be eliminated.
Nutrience Recalls
Based on our research (FDA, AVMA, DogFoodAdvisor), Nutrience is a recall-free brand.
To achieve this recall-free record, Nutrience must take its safety and quality processes seriously. We hope that these high standards continue in the years to come.
We always ask that pet owners are vigilant of any future recalls of Nutrience or any other pet food brand.

Best of Nutrience
Sub Zero Northern Lakes Review
The Sub Zero range from Nutrience is our favorite thanks to the large portions of meat and fish ingredients the recipes use.
This holds true for the above recipe, which has an unusual mix of meat and fish ingredients in Duck, Trout, Salmon, Herring, Hake, and Sebastes.
This mix of poultry and fish ingredients is sure to provide a unique taste and a massive proportion of protein and fat.
Fish ingredients like Salmon are excellent sources of the Omega Fatty Acids, which is reflected in the recipe as it has 1.5% by weight of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids. This is significantly above-average for a dry dog food recipe.
Outside of this huge list of poultry and fish ingredients, the recipe utilizes a small portion of Peas, Lentils, Chickpeas, and Sweet Potatoes. These plant-based ingredients provide a mix of carbohydrates and fiber.
Grain Free Pork, Lamb & Venison Pate Review
The above wet dog food recipe from Nutrience also uses an unusual mix of meat ingredients. It contains Pork, Lamb, and Venison, which are all red meat ingredients.
Despite its widespread use in food for human consumption, Pork is rarely seen in dog food.
In addition, Venison is considered a premium meat ingredient that is used by high-cost brands and sometimes features in food for dogs with severe allergies or sensitivities.
You can learn more about Venison’s use in dog food in Best Dog Foods With Venison.
The above-discussed meat ingredients make up the bulk of the recipe, and only a small portion is from plant-based ingredients. Examples of these include Sweet Potatoes and Lentils.
Sub Zero Fraser Valley Review
Similar to the Sub Zero dog food range from Nutrience, the Sub Zero cat food range is impressive and utilizes large portions of meat and fish ingredients.
The above Fraser Valley has a strong focus on poultry ingredients, including Chicken and Turkey. Also, it doesn’t just utilize whole meat ingredients but also includes some organ meat ingredients like Chicken Liver, Chicken Heart, and Turkey Liver.
These organ meat ingredients will enhance the recipe’s flavor and boost levels of beneficial vitamins and minerals.
The formula includes a small portion of plant-based ingredients, which consists of Lentils, Peas, Chickpeas, and Sweet Potatoes. When combined, the portion size is still small and provides a modest proportion of carbohydrates and fiber.
Sub Zero Salmon Pâté Review
Wet cat food is an excellent choice to be a component of any cat’s diet. This is as wet cat food can aid cats in taking in moisture and avoid urinary issues.
The above Pate recipe from Nutrience would be a worthy choice and focuses heavily on Salmon.
Salmon is a high-quality ingredient and one of the best sources of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids. These fatty acids are believed to provide several health benefits to cats, including an improvement in their skin and fur.
Outside of a large portion of Salmon, the recipe does not have notable ingredients outside of a tiny portion of Carrots and Peas. These vegetable ingredients provide a small proportion of carbohydrates and some fiber.

Hi,
I was wondering what type of food would you suggest for a dog that has stomach sensitive and allergies.
She also need a low fat diet…..
Some of her allergies are turkey, peas, eggs, brewer yeast.
Suggestion for both can wet food and dry food
Thanks Chyanne
My 2 years old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has been for 2 months on the nutrience grain free for sensitive stomach and skin. He loves it and his coat is shiny, his body weight ideal. The only issue is that his stools are formed but very soft, so soft that it is difficult to pick up in the bag without leaving some in the grass. I gave him probiotics that my vet sold me. It didn’t do anything. Is there something I could give him as extra to solidify his stools or should I switch him to a different one?
