Solid Gold Information
Solid Gold produces a holistic line of pet food products, and the brand was launched in 1974 by founder Sissy Harrington-McGill who raised Great Danes.
One of the most distinctive features of Solid Gold products is the creative and unique names of their formulas. This creativity includes examples like Barking at the Moon and Love at First Bark.
All of Solid Gold’s dry dog and cat food recipes are produced in the United States.
However, their wet cat food products are made in Thailand, but Solid Gold maintains that their strict standards are still enforced at this facility.
Most ingredients in Solid Gold pet food are sourced from the United States, but some come from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, and France.
Solid Gold Product Range
Given their tenure in the industry, it will come as no surprise that Solid Gold has a very extensive product range across both dog food and cat food.
Dog Food
Solid Gold’s dog food range includes traditional dry dog food recipes alongside specialty formulas such as high protein formulas, small and large breed formulas, and formulas to aid weight loss or prevent weight gain.
They also produce other varieties of dog food, such as wet/canned dog food, dog treats, and dog supplements. The wet/canned recipes come in a mix of traditional cans and cups.
Cat Food
Solid Gold’s range of cat food is very similar to its dog food range but is slightly smaller. It consists of an extensive dry cat food range, wet/canned cat food, and cat supplements.
The dry cat food range includes recipes for indoor cats and kittens. The canned varieties available come in a multitude of forms, including “in gravy” recipes, pate recipes, and pouches.
Solid Gold Nutrition
Dog Food
The nutrition provided by Solid Gold dry dog food recipes varies tremendously.
Some recipes, such as the two “Barking At The Moon” recipes, provide excellent nutrition that is significantly above average. This includes a very high proportion of protein and fat.
However, other recipes provide average or even below average nutrition. These recipes are very high in carbohydrates and have protein levels that are suitable for dogs with low activity levels.
Cat Food
The nutrition offered by Solid Gold’s cat food range is also extremely varied. Many of the dry food recipes offer poor nutrition. Cat’s do not need a high proportion of carbohydrates in their diet as they are obligate carnivores.
However, the majority of Solid Gold’s canned/wet cat food products do offer suitable nutrition that is high in protein and fat.
Solid Gold Ingredients
Given the very large product range that Solid Gold has, the variety of ingredients used by them is vast.
High-Quality Ingredients
- Beef
- Turkey
- Chicken
- Pork
- Lamb
- Venison
- Bison
- Tuna
- Mackerel
- Shrimp
Some of the high-quality meat and fish ingredients found in Solid Gold formulas are listed above.
These named and whole meat and fish ingredients are ideal components of a dog or cat’s diet. They can provide a plentiful and easily digested source of protein and fat, which is critical to fuel growth, maintenance, and repair.
In addition, Solid Gold makes use of some of the more uncommon and unique meat and fish ingredients. Examples could include Bison and Venison.
These ingredients are often a part of specialist recipes or recipes for dogs with severe allergies or sensitivities. Check out the articles below to learn more.
Low-Quality Ingredients
- Pea Protein
- Rice Bran
Unfortunately, Solid Gold does use some questionable or low-quality ingredients in its recipes.
The primary example of this is Pea Protein. Pea Protein is a vegetable by-product derived from Peas. It is a regular feature in many dog food recipes.
It is usually used to increase the overall proportion of protein without needing to splash out on additional meat or fish ingredients.
It is also used in a technique known as Ingredient Splitting, which can deceive consumers about the proportion of an ingredient in a recipe.
Learn more about Pea Protein in our article Peas, Pea Protein, Pea Flour, and Pea Fiber in Dog Food.
Learn more about Ingredient Splitting in our article Ingredient Splitting in Pet Food – Exposed.
Other Notable Ingredients
While many dog food brands avoid grains in their recipes, Sold Gold does produce some recipes with grains. However, Solid Gold primarily uses grains such as Brown Rice, Oatmeal, and Barley.
These grains are considered to be some of the better grains and are preferred over others, such as Wheat and Corn.
They can provide additional nutrition beyond their carbohydrate content, such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Flaxseed is a common ingredient present in many dog food brand’s recipes. It is probably the best plant-based source of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids.
These fatty acids can provide a range of health benefits, which is why they are included so frequently.
Solid Gold is among this group and uses Flaxseed in the majority of their formulas. Read about Flaxseed and its many benefits in our article Flaxseed In Dog Food.
Tomato Pomace is added to many dog food recipes as a source of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber can aid some dogs digestive systems allowing it to be more consistent and regular.
However, some dog owners are concerned with pesticide levels in Tomatoes. Find out more about Tomato Pomace in our article Tomato Pomace as a Pet Food Ingredient?.
Chicory Root is a dietary supplement that is starting to see popularity in dog food recipes. Its supporters believe it can provide a range of health benefits, but the evidence to support this is limited.
Read more about Chicory Root in our article, Dried Chicory Root In Dog Food.
Solid Gold Animal Testing
Unlike a lot of other pet food brands, Sold Gold does state some limited information about Animal testing on its website. They state that they do not participate in any invasive animal testing.
They do, however, work with reputable kennels to feed test new innovation for palatability and digestibility. Also, their own Solid Gold pets participate in any palatability testing.
We are strong believers that invasive animal testing for the purposes of testing pet food is a cruel and outdated practice. We hope that it will be severely reduced or eliminated in the near future.
Solid Gold Recalls
Sadly, Solid Gold is not recall-free. However, based on our research (FDA, AVMA, DogFoodAdvisor), their recall history is quite brief and limited to a single recall.
Hopefully, Solid Gold will learn from this experience and will ensure its safety standards are kept exemplary in the future.
In May 2012, the FDA issued a recall for two of Solid Gold’s dry dog food recipes – WolfCub Large Breed Puppy Food and WolfKing Large Breed Adult Dog Food.
This recall was due to potential salmonella contamination. Salmonella contamination can be deadly, which is why it’s incredibly important to recall any products with potential contamination.
In addition, Salmonella can affect both humans and dogs, which is why the risk is severe. Learn more about the risks of Salmonella in pet food in this article by Banfield Pet Hospital.

Barking At The Moon With Beef Review
ㅤSolid Gold Discontinued their high protein range and replaced it with two High Protein recipes, which are Barking At The Moon With Beef and Barking At The Moon With Duck.
While these recipes are not quite as unique as their predecessors, they do differ from other high protein recipes by not focusing on Chicken.
Ingredients in Barking At The Moon With Beef include Beef, Eggs, and Ocean Fish Meal. These combine to provide a very high protein proportion.
Eggs, in particular, are another noteworthy ingredient as they are one of the most complete sources of protein available for both humans and dogs alike.
Unfortunately, Solid Gold’s High Protein recipes do use a Potato-By product, which is Potato Protein.
This by-product contributes plant-based protein, which is considered inferior to animal protein. Sadly, Potato Protein is the third listed ingredient, so this portion is not small.
Find out more about Potato Protein in our article Potatoes, Potato Protein & Potato Starch in Dog Food.
Despite its use of Potato Protein, Solid Gold’s Barking At The Moon still contains a large portion of animal and fish-based protein and is viable for those dog owners looking for a high protein recipe while being on a tight budget.
Leaping Waters With Chicken & Salmon Review
ㅤWhile it was difficult for us to select a definitive favorite among Solid Gold’s range of canned and wet dog food, Leaping Waters is, without a doubt, one of our favorites.
This is thanks to its balanced mix of poultry, fish, and vegetable ingredients. Chicken, Whitefish, and Salmon are the primary poultry and fish ingredients. Each of these can provide high-quality protein and fat to contribute to a dog’s diet.
In addition, fish such as Whitefish and particularly Salmon can provide a high level of beneficial Omega 3 Fatty Acids.
These fatty acids can improve the condition of a dog’s skin and coat as well as improve heart health.
However, the formula isn’t just made of poultry and fish, and it also contains small portions of vegetables such as Carrots, Potatoes, and Peas.
These can provide a modest proportion of carbohydrates and dietary fiber, as well as some vitamins and minerals.
Indigo Moon With Alaskan Pollock & Eggs Review
ㅤSold Gold’s Indigo Moon cat food products are very similar to their “Barking At The Moon” dog food products.
They are both high-protein ranges and provide excellent nutrition to dogs and cats alike.
Flavorful Feast With Tuna & Sardine In Gravy Review
ㅤWhile there is some variety, many of Solid Gold’s canned cat food products are very similar in terms of nutrition and ingredient quality.
One recipe we would like to highlight is Flavorful Feast With Tuna & Sardine In Gravy.
