Little Hunter is a newcomer to the dog food scene and launched its products to customers in 2022. Like many new entrants to the dog food industry in recent years, they’re an online-only brand and aim to provide high-quality premium dog food to owners via a subscription service.

However, while many new online-only brands produce fresh dog food, Little Hunter is different and produces freeze-dried raw dog food.

Their About Us Page discusses how they initially tried fresh and lightly cooked dog food production but struggled with various challenges, such as logistics, before attempting frozen raw and finally freeze-dried raw.

While their dog food products are noticeably different, other brands with a similar business model include Nom Nom, The Farmer’s Dog, Ollie, and Pet Plate.

For those wondering where Little Hunter dog food is made, their recipes are produced in small batches from a facility in the United States in Wisconsin.

As we touched on earlier, Little Hunter dog food is sold online directly from Little Hunter, and you won’t find it at large pet food retailers in the United States like PetSmart or Petco.

They primarily aim to have dog owners sign up for a subscription to their food, with orders being delivered to the address at regular intervals.

This subscription model is designed to make life easier for pet owners and comes with a noticeable discount.

However, they also allow for one-time purchases if you want to try the food out without the commitment.

Little Hunter Product Range

Like many other smaller raw dog food brands, Little Hunter’s dog food range is small and consists of just four unique raw dog food recipes.

However, each of these recipes contains a unique protein ingredient, such as Chicken or Beef, which is essential for many dogs who are picky eaters.

Little Hunter also has a small range of dog treats, which customers can bundle with their raw dog food purchases, some of which are organ meat-based.

Little Hunter utilizes a wide range of meat and fish ingredients in its recipes, especially given how small and young the brand is.

These ingredients are high-quality and dense sources of animal-based protein and fat, which is crucial to every dog’s diet.

They also include some ingredients that are not common in dog food recipes, such as Rabbit and Krill, which could provide unique flavors or nutrition.

In addition, Little Hunter includes Organ Meat ingredients in its recipes, such as liver. These organ meat ingredients are incredibly nutritious and can boost the level of protein and fat while also providing several beneficial vitamins and minerals that may not be abundant in typical meat cuts.

Other Notable Ingredients

Flaxseed is a common addition to dog food recipes and features in notable quantities within Little Hunter formulas.

Flaxseed is best known as an excellent plant-based source of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids, which are known to provide several health benefits to dogs.

These include improving the condition of a dog’s skin and coat and improved heart and brain health.

Little Hunter uses several fruit and vegetable ingredients in its recipes that aren’t common in dog food, such as Carrots, Kale, and Blueberries.

While the quantity of these isn’t huge, they still provide some additional carbohydrates, fiber, and beneficial vitamins and minerals and could provide a unique flavor to make the food more appealing.

Sweet Potato is probably the only carbohydrate-providing ingredient found in Little Hunter dog food recipes that is popular throughout the industry.

Sweet Potatoes are dense sources of carbohydrates and fiber, similar to White Potatoes, and are also helpful to help bind food together thanks to their starch.

Lastly, small quantities of Kelp can be found in Little Hunter recipes, which may be better known to some as seaweed.

Very few dog food brands currently utilize Kelp, but some examples include Ziwi Peak, K9 Natural, and Stella & Chewys.

Kelp can be included in dog food as a binding agent to keep food in a consistent texture and appearance, but it is more likely included for its potential health benefits.

Kelp has a surprisingly high level of plant-based protein and contains unusual minerals such as Iodine.

Little Hunter Animal Testing

At this time, we have no information on whether Little Hunter participates in invasive or laboratory testing of animals.

However, given Little Hunter’s small scale and branding, we believe it is unlikely that they do. It would be ideal if Little Hunter clarified their testing approach on their website to assure existing and potential customers.

Regardless, we are firmly against the use of invasive or laboratory testing for the production of pet food recipes and hope that any brands that continue to do so end this practice as soon as possible.

Little Hunter Recalls

Based on our research (FDA, AVMA, DogFoodAdvisor), we can find no evidence that leads us to believe that Little Hunter dog food recipes have ever undergone a recall, which makes Little Hunter a recall-free dog food brand.

However, given that Little Hunter is a highly young brand and is so far selling small volumes of dog food, this recall-free record isn’t a huge shock.

Regardless, we hope they can maintain high quality and safety standards to maintain this recall-free record in the coming months and years.

Nevertheless, we always encourage dog owners to be vigilant of any future recalls from Little Hunter or other dog food brands to ensure their dogs remain healthy and safe.

Raw Salmon & Whitefish Recipe Review

While we regularly have a preference for seafood-based recipes, the Raw Salmon and Whitefish recipe from Little Hunter is one of the best we’ve ever reviewed.

It includes a considerable portion of Salmon, Whitefish, and Ground Krill, all of which are high-quality seafood-based ingredients.

These help to provide a minimum of 49% protein and 37% fat, which is unheard of in the industry and shows that almost the entire recipe is protein and fat-based.

While it isn’t listed on Little Hunter’s website, we can speculate that the portion of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids in this recipe is also extremely high.

These fatty acids can provide many health benefits to dogs, including an improvement in the condition of their skin and coat and reduced inflammation.

The little plant-based content found in this recipe comes from tiny portions of Carrots, Kale, Blueberries, Sweet Potatoes, and Guava.

These ingredients provide a very modest portion of carbohydrates, some dietary fiber, and a range of beneficial vitamins and minerals.
